The Application layer is responsible for directly accessing the underlying processes that manage and deliver communication to the human network. This layer serves as the source and destination of communications across data networks.<br /><br />The Application layer applications, protocols, and services enable users to interact with the data network in a way that is meaningful and effective.<br /><br />Applications are computer programs with which the user interacts and which initiate the data transfer process at the user's request.<br /><br />Services are background programs that provide the connection between the Application layer and the lower layers of the networking model.<br /><br />Protocols provide a structure of agreed-upon rules and processes that ensure services running on one particular device can send and receive data from a range of different network devices.<br /><br />Delivery of data over the network can be requested from a server by a client, or between devices that operate in a peer-to-peer arrangement, where the client/server relationship is established according to which device is the source and destination at that time. Messages are exchanged between the Application layer services at each end device in accordance with the protocol specifications to establish and use these relationships.<br /><br />Protocols like HTTP, for example, support the delivery of web pages to end devices. SMTP/POP protocols support sending and receiving e-mail. SMB enables users to share files. This means that the individual wires in the cable have to be connected in different orders to different sets of pins in the RJ-45 connectors. Shielded Twisted-Pair (STP)<br /><br /><b>Coaxial Cable</b><br /><br />Coaxial cable consists of a copper conductor surrounded by a layer of flexible insulation, as shown in the figure.<br /><br />Over this insulating material is a woven copper braid, or metallic foil, that acts as the second wire in the circuit and as a shield for the inner conductor. This second layer, or shield, also reduces the amount of outside electromagnetic interference. Covering the shield is the cable jacket. <br /><br />All the elements of the coaxial cable encircle the center conductor. Because they all share the same axis, this construction is called coaxial, or coax for short.<br /><br /><b>Uses of Coaxial Cable</b><br /><br />The coaxial cable design has been adapted for different purposes. Coax is an important type of cable that is used in wireless and cable access technologies. Coax cables are used to attach antennas to wireless devices. The coaxial cable carries radio frequency (RF) energy between the antennas and the radio equipment. <br /><br />Coax is also the most widely used media for transporting high radio frequency <br />signals over wire, especially cable television signals. Traditional cable television, exclusively transmitting in one direction, was composed completely of coax cable. <br /><br />Cable service providers are currently converting their one-way systems to two-way systems to provide Internet connectivity to their customers. To provide these services, portions of the coaxial cable and supporting amplification elements are replaced with multi-fiber-optic cable. However, the final connection to the customer's location and the wiring inside the customer's premises is still coax cable. This combined use of fiber and coax is referred to as hybrid fiber coax (HFC).<br /><br />In the past, coaxial cable was used in Ethernet installations. Here are four reasons why.<br /><ul><li>The smaller tablets weigh next to nothing. The Lenovo IdeaTab Miix 2 8 weighs only 0.77 pounds.</li><li>Battery life can be fantastic. PCWorld's test of the IdeaTab, for instance, showed it lasted more than 10 hours on a charge. </li><li>A small Windows tablet doesn't mean tiny performance. My Lenovo tablet, though not a speed demon, handles basic computing tasks efficiently. </li><li>Like some other small Windows tablets, the IdeaTab comes with Office Home & Student Edition 2013 preinstalled, which includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint but not Outlook. Of course, because it's a "real" Windows machine, you can install other versions of Office that include Outlook.</li></ul>To make any Windows tablet more laptop-like, you need accessories, such as a fine-point stylus and an external keyboard. For the latter, I recommend Logitech's K810 Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard, which costs $63 on Amazon. It's nearly twice as wide as the IdeaTab but the keys are spaced apart. You can sync the keyboard to as many as three devices at a time. And the sculpted keys are backlit. In short: It's one of the classiest tablet keyboards I've seen.<br />You'll also want a micro USB-to-USB adapter ($5 on Amazon) to attach an external USB mouse, keyboard or other peripheral. I had no luck connecting my Samsung external DVD drive, however.<br />As I mentioned, there are trade-offs when you use such a small Windows machine. The IdeaTab only has 2GB of memory, it can't be upgraded, and it might prevent you from installing certain software programs. You can't physically attach an external monitor, and your eyes will grow weary looking at an eight-inch tablet screen for more than a few hours. The selection of Windows 8 tablet-optimized apps, though steadily improving, still lags behind iOS and Android.<br />Clearly, the small Windows 8 tablet market is in a bit of flux. Some say it is a doomed product category, though Microsoft recently said $99 small tablets running Windows 8 will be available by year's end. Dell's Venue 8 Pro Tablet ($249) is one available option. And Lenovo says it will come out with new, small Windows tablets later this year.

With that information, the controller could put off storage-specific tasks that could be done at any time, such as "garbage collection," or rearranging the bits on the SSD ahead of time for optimal performance in the future.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">"For a fully loaded SSD, if you can control garbage collection at the application level, you get about 1000x reduction in latency," or the delay in delivering bits to where they are needed for processing, Brennan said.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Farther out, better coordination could allow enterprises to tap into SSD controllers as an added computing resource in their data centers. There often is excess capacity in those processors, according to Insight64 research fellow Nathan Brookwood. Even as fast as flash media can deliver bits, the highly tuned, specialized silicon in SSD controllers can work much faster, he said.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">What's more, giving computing tasks to SSD controllers could mean having those chips work with the data right under their noses in the drive, slashing the delays that come from transporting bits.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The big hurdle to making that work would be the very specialization that makes those controllers so well suited to their main tasks. Unlike the server chips that do the number-crunching in data centers, they aren't x86 processors.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">"Everybody in the industry has a slightly different architecture for their controller," Brennan said in an interview at the event. Splitting up tasks between an x86 CPU and an SSD controller would be a far cry from distributing them across multiple chips and cores.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">"It's a non-trivial problem," said Arun Taneja, founder and consulting analyst at Taneja Group. "I don't see a very clear path."</div>
